Illawarra Shoalhaven Psychology prides itself on delivering evidence-based services and interventions to anyone seeking help for their mental health. We primarily use a CBT-based model of care, but adopt an eclectic approach by combining CBT with techniques from various others modes, depending on the individual’s needs.

Illawarra Shoalhaven Psychology values:

Education. we believe that if the client can understand how and why their mind and body are working the way they are, then they will feel empowered to make a change. When we understand something we also fear it less and we feel more empowered which equals positive emotional change.

Outcomes. to be blunt we don’t believe in ‘tea and sympathy’. We believe everyone has the capacity to change and recover, and we want to walk beside you on that journey, seeing you through challenges and toward the goals you want to reach. Remember that with challenges comes growth, but you have to be ready to ride the waves of change.

Mind-body connection. if you hurt emotionally then you will usually embody that hurt in your physical health, and the opposite is also true. Your mind and body are both part of your whole system, and so we take a holistic approach to mental health, informed by neuroscience that proves just how amazing we are at adapting and healing.

Trauma-informed. as mentioned above we have a passion for helping our clients understand how their mind works so that ultimately they don’t fear their own psychology. This is most important for those who have experienced trauma and we strive to help you understand and normalise your reactions to trauma, so you can be freed of their consequences. We like to understand mental health by asking “what happened to you?” rather than “what’s wrong with you?”.
